Praying the Psalms

If you have never heard of Voddie Bauchman, you are missing out!! You can google "Voddie Bachman" and "aduio" and find lots of FREE online talkings he has given. He even has his own You Tube station! (So does Vision Forum by the way!) In one that was recently spoken at a homeschooling conference, he mentioned that his family, will at times, read a Psalm and pray through it. I have never heard this before. And the timing could not have been better as Psalms in the book of the Bible I am currentl

Another “Home Schooler”

During the voucher debates, I noted that not all kids fit in the public school system (designed for the majority and not all children) and parents had the incentive to work within the public schools prior to ever thinking of taking their child out of the school in favor of an alternative.  At the time, I took comfort in the fact that my child fit well in the public school system.  Unfortunately, that changed. Last year was quite challenging and we worked for the majority of the school year to

Rebel without a cause

It's the third week in August. We're supposed to be starting school next week. (I know!) Did I mention that it's still AUGUST??? In fact, this coming Friday (which will still be in AUGUST, but that's not important right now),...

Don’t Get Too Comfortable, California

Technorati Search for: homeschooling August 20th, 2008

I’ve been debating with myself whether or not to post about the recent CA court ruling. Homeschoolers in California are so happy about the court’s decision, in particular the people who were directly involved in the case. So, I’m hesitant to say anything negative about it. On the other hand, there are also people, the vast majority of which are not in California, and none of which who were directly involved in the courtroom for this case, who have serious trepidations about the wording of the

Books and Character, Part III

Technorati Search for: homeschooling August 20th, 2008

Or- The Necessity of Horrible Warnings and Bad Examples This is Books and Character, Part The Third. Yesterday I said that the bad examples in literature are at least as important as the good examples. I think this is particularly true for my children, and other families something like ours. In some ways, we live somewhat sheltered lives. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Some aspects of that are deliberate. Other aspects of that are consequences of other choices we've made for othe

School and Life

Technorati Search for: homeschooling August 20th, 2008

It never ceases to amaze me just how interesting our first week of our Fall semester can be each year. This year we had most of our work planned out for months in advance and it stayed that way until this past weekend when I finally finished pulling things together. That’s not like me. I usually have everything organized and ready much further in advance. The sad thing is that all those years that I pulled things together far in advance don’t seem to have any real advantage over this year.

More Educational Thoughts, Much More

Technorati Search for: homeschooling August 20th, 2008

More Educational Thoughts, Much More School is going great over here but we're very focused and there is no time to blog. Some of you have asked great questions and made thought-provoking insights which I would love to touch on...but there is no time this week. I've learned to reap mightily these "focused" weeks because there are always weeks when the focus just isn't there. So I thought I'd pass this along for any of you questioning the homeschooling approach, trying to discern whether or

Above My Pay Grade?

Technorati Search for: homeschooling August 20th, 2008

Wow. I don’t get paid for what I do. Not monetarily anyway. But there are MANY MANY things I certainly would NOT consider to be above my pay grade. I *know* my baby has human rights even before he/she is born. That argument about fetuses being just blobs/groups of cells? Sorry, not buying. People abort BABIES. They don’t abort TISSUES. If babies were merely tissue, you could just leave them alone and they would NOT turn into babies. That’s just an excuse promoters of contraception and abortio

Blackberry Love

Not the fruit... The cool phone my husband has for work. On a recent treip through the mountains I had waaaay too much fun playing with all the features including GPS, interenet access, and games. The kids had to fight me for it the whole trip. I was able to research homeschooling curriculums, check the weather, talk to the dentist and add an appt to my google calendar, follow our car through the mountains on the screen, and get an estimated time of arrival. Of course we also had fun laughing
